Developmental Placement and Courses

CCBC uses placement tests to determine which courses are appropriate for your skill level.

If you score below a certain level on CCBC's placement tests, you may be required to take developmental courses in math or academic literacy. If you are required to take developmental courses, the time required to complete your degree may be extended. These courses, which do not provide college credit, provide the academic preparation needed to succeed in college-level courses.

CCBC offers developmental courses in academic literacy and mathematics (081, 082, and 083) to help you get started. Effective for Fall 2016, CCBC will no longer offer ENGL 051, ENGL 052, MATH 073, RDNG 051,or RDNG 052.  Reading and English have been integrated into two accelerated options.  Your class placement will be based on your ACCUPLACER results.

  • Students with an ENGL 052 & RDNG NA placement are eligible to take ACLT 053/ENGL 101 ALP (recommended), or ACLT 053 standalone
  • Students with a RDNG 052 & ENGL 101 placement are eligible to take ACLT 053/ENGL 101 ALP (recommended, or ACLT 053 standalone
  • Students with an ENGL 052 &  RDNG 052 placement are eligible to take ACLT 053/ENGL 101 ALP (recommended) or ACLT 053 standalone
  • Students with an ENGL 052 & RDNG 051 placement are eligible to take ACLT 052
  • Students with an ENGL 051 & RDNG 052 placement are eligible to take ACLT 052
  • Students with an ENGL 051 & RDNG 051 placement are eligible to take ACLT 052

Students who place into the upper level academic literacy courses may enroll concurrently in English 101, a gateway credit course, as part of CCBC’s nationally acclaimed Accelerated Learning Program (ALP). Students may also qualify for the Accelerated Math Program (AMP), which blends the following courses:

  • MATH 081 (Pre-Algebra) and Math 082 (Introductory Algebra)
  • MATH 082 (Introductory Algebra) and MATH 083 (Intermediate Algebra) 
  • MATH 083 (Intermediate Algebra) and MATH 135 (Applied Algebra & Trigonometry)
  • MATH 083 (Intermediate Algebra) and MATH 163 (Pre-Calculus I)

Both ALP and AMP enable students to advance more quickly into desired credit coursework.

Nationally certified and acclaimed programs

CCBC’s Developmental Education program is nationally certified by the National Association of Developmental Education (NADE) at the Distinguished Level – the highest level. The documented success of students enrolled in CCBC’s Accelerated Learning Program (ALP) has inspired colleges throughout the nation to adopt an ALP model to developmental education.
