CCBC earns Phi Theta Kappa awards
May 07, 2018CCBC’s Phi Theta Kappa (PTK) Honor Society members garnered several awards at the recent PTK Catalyst 2018 International Convention held in Kansas City, Mo. Ten students and advisors represented CCBC at the event, which also celebrated PTK’s 100th anniversary.
Each of CCBC’s three PTK chapters are Five-Star Chapters based on their involvement at the regional and international levels. To earn this status, PTK Chapters are required to complete two projects. The first is a Chapter Project related to a specific theme. In addition, chapters must complete an Honors in Action project. The Honors Study Topic, How the World Works: Global Perspectives, included a choice of eight themes on which to build a special project.

Chi Theta Chapter Advisor Sue Fenton was named as a 2018 Most Distinguished Advisor. The Chi Theta Chapter was recognized as one of the Top 100 Chapters and it also was honored as a Distinguished Chapter. The chapter earned an award for its Honors in Action Project overall and an Honors in Action Theme Award. The theme of the project was Myth vs. Reality. It focused on the accessibility of “The American Dream” and how it relates to the Deferred Action for Childhood Arrivals (DACA) U.S. immigration policy and its implementation.

The Beta Alpha Tau Chapter focused on college completion as well as the campus food pantry. The students examined the connection between hunger, or “food insecurity,” and the ability to concentrate on academics. Their Honors in Action project centered on informing people about civic engagement as a vital aspect of civil society.

Alpha Rho Psi was recognized as a Five-Star Chapter, the highest level in PTK.
Phi Theta Kappa is recognized as the official honor society for community colleges by the American Association of Community Colleges.
